What is TOEFL?

The TOEFL test is a standardized test for internationally recognized knowledge of English. It is used by many English-speaking universities in the USA, Great Britain, Canada and all around the world. It is also accepted by various Grandes Ecoles (renowned French universities) with English-language programs for the admission of international students.

More than 8,500 universities, agencies and other institutions in over 130 countries accept the TOEFL test. More than 27 million people have completed the TOEFL test since its inception in 1967, including 1 million in 2011. However, many students need to understand the TOEFL better.

The test measures your ability to understand, write and speak English.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL Test) was developed to assess the language skills of non-native English speakers. The test has evolved over time. Today, its most common form is the TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test), administered over the Internet. The exam consists of 4 sections: reading, listening, speaking and writing, which are always taken in the same order.

One exam, Four parts

The exam is divided into four qualification areas. This makes the test a complete assessment of your English skills.

Reading: You have 60-80 minutes for this paper. It contains 36-56 questions. There are 3-4 reading passages with questions that you can answer.

Listening: This paper is 60-90 minutes long. It has 34-51 questions and you will hear a variety of recordings. This includes lectures, class discussions and discussions.

Speaking: There are 6 oral tasks to complete in 20 minutes. You will be asked to express an opinion on a familiar topic, and speak on topics from the listening and reading tasks.

Writing: This document contains two tasks for which you have 60 minutes to complete. You are asked to write an answer to an essay and to support an opinion. The topics are connected with those in the reading and listening tasks.

You can find more information on the guidelines for the TOEFL IBT test on the blog.

What is TOEFL IBT Timing?

The “TOEFL Reading” section lasts between 60 and 100 minutes. It consists of 3 or 5 exercises. The first exercise lasts 20 minutes. The second and third exercises, as well as the fourth and fifth exercises are combined and last 40 minutes.

Note: ETS, the parent company of TOEFL, reserves the right to provide 3 or 5 exercises for you. However, you will be taught in 3 exercises only. If you are asked to do 5 exercises, you will not know which one will be actually marked. That is how ETS is testing new exercises.

The “TOEFL Listening” section lasts 60 to 90 minutes. It usually consists of 6 exercises, but you may be asked to do 9 exercises on the test day. Each exercise takes approximately 10 minutes. Therefore, the entire section lasts one hour (with 6 exercises) or one and a half hours (with 9 exercises). (see more TOEFL listening)

Tip 1: Even if you are aware that you will only receive 3 exercises for the “Reading” section and 6 exercises for the “Listening” section, you must remain focused throughout the test if you are asked to do more exercises. As already mentioned, you cannot know in advance which exercises will actually be marked.

Tip 2:
You can see that the first part of the test (sections “Reading” and “Listening”) can take 3 hours before your break – remember to go to the toilet beforehand! The examination requires a constant focus. It is therefore important to practice for a long time in real conditions without interruption. In fact, we found that many students were ultimately disappointed with their results in the “Reading” and “Listening” sections, while these are usually the sections in which the students feel safest. The main reason for this is the lack of concentration over time and the negligent mistakes that can occur.

Tip 3:
10-minute break outside the exam room.

Tip 4:
You will move on to the “Speaking” section, which is much feared but is actually not that terrible. This section takes about 20 minutes. It consists of 6 exercises for which you have to speak for 30 seconds to 1 minute. (more about TOEFL)

Tip 5:
Finally, complete the test with the “Writing” section, which takes 50 minutes. It consists of 2 writing exercises, each lasting 20 minutes and 30 minutes. (see more TOEFL writing)

TOEFL Score

Each of the 4 sections is rated with 30 or a quarter of the overall grade: 120.

Tip 1: Universities often need minimum points in certain sections, often in the speaking area. For example, to apply to prestigious universities in the UK you need a minimum score of 22 in the language area. These requirements are rare, but it is important to check with the universities you are applying to before you apply to the TOEFL. Prepare the test.

Tip 2:
If you don’t need a minimum score, you can set completely different goals for each section. If you need 100 points, you get 25 in each section, but also 27 for reading and listening and 23 for speaking and writing. Set a grade goal and develop a training strategy for each section to achieve your overall goal.

Tip 3:
In general, it is important to define a good preparation method for cracking the TOEFL. The ATANER ENGLISH ACADEMY team of teachers gives you the 3 winning strategies for a good TOEFL preparation.

Where to take the TOEFL ?

Many exam centers are accredited to host TOEFL exam sessions. Below are useful links to help you figure out where to take the TOEFL. Here are two important tips to keep in mind when preparing for the TOEFL:

1. Register for the exam as soon as possible!

If you have decided on an exam date, book your place immediately. Depending on where you live and when you plan to take the test, availability may be limited. Make sure you register early, e.g. at least 3 months before the exam date.

2. Check where your exam will take place and arrive on time for the exam day

It is important to check where you will take the test before the exam day in order to plan your trip there. Remember that you must arrive 30 minutes before the test begins. Late candidates can be refused entry.

3. Know what to bring.

Remember to bring your invitation letter and a valid ID (with your picture and signature). You don’t need to bring pens or draft papers as they are provided.

Note that you can take the test in any test center. We have written some articles to help you find test centers all over the world.

The TOEFL IBT score: from 0 to 120

Each skill area gets an individual score and you also get a total score for the TOEFL exam. Each section is 30 and the total is 120. You must answer at least one question in each work to get a score.

There is no passing or failing in TOEFL. It is a test of your English skills at the time of your participation. You can take the TOEFL as often as you like, but there is a waiting period of 12 days between tests. For this reason, the score is only valid for 2 years, as your language skills may change over time. Many institutions will require a certain minimum number of points.

Scoring per section of the test

Giving the best in the exam is the most important thing. This can also be achieved with practice without putting too much pressure on yourself. You have a goal and work hard to achieve it. Just don’t fall into the trap of negative pressure on “I need to get this score” and distract yourself from really studying for the test.

Each section receives a score. This also means that you can see where you are strong and where improvements are needed.

The TOEFL values also correspond to the GER values. The TOEFL is rated with 120 points:

Between 42 and 71 points, this corresponds to level B1: it is a basic level that is not sufficient to apply for a university abroad.

Between 71 and 94 points, this corresponds to the B2 level: it is already a more acceptable level as far as we consider that your language ability is good enough. Indeed, the majority of universities worldwide ask for a score which varies between 80 and 94 points.

Over 94 points, it equivalent to the C1 level: this shows an excellent language level, asked by the most prestigious higher education institutes in the world such as Harvard or the London Business School.

How to register for the TOEFL IBT?

You can register for the exam via ETS. This can be done by phone, post or over the Internet. On the ETS website you will find all the information you need to apply because you have to choose a test center and an exam date. Make sure that you fill in all sections carefully and have a copy of your identity card ready.

There are many test centers around the world. We have several articles to help you find test centers in Germany, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands.

Test preparation to increase your score

Studying for the exam is the only way to improve. You need to learn what is included in each test paper, how the test day is structured, develop exam skills to complete the work within the allotted time, and practice your English.
